Meet your guide
Hello! I’m Dr. Erica Volk, a totally gut-obsessed naturopathic doctor based in Kelowna, British Columbia.

I was wrongly diagnosed with IBS and lived with my symptoms for more than 15 years before I found out what was really going on with my gut. I'm passionate about helping people who are confused or depressed about their digestive symptoms figure out and treat the real problems so they can get back to food freedom and feeling good. No one should have to go through life limited to restrictive diets or debilitating symptoms!

My goal, whether through a group program or working with you one-on-one, is to help you discover the true cause of your digestive symptoms so you can finally treat the real problem, stop relying on medications, supplements, and restrictive diets, and get back to living your awesome life!

FAQs

How big are the groups?

Each group has a maximum of 5 spots available to ensure you receive quality care and have lots of opportunity to discuss your health and ask questions.

Why choose a group treatment program vs one-on-one care?

Everyone has their preference for the type of treatment they prefer. Some of the benefits of a group treatment program vs 1:1 care include:

  • Lower cost/better value –– $800-925 for 4 hours of education + 8 hours of appointment time compared to >$2520 for the same amount of time 1:1
  • Enhanced treatment outcomes: research has shown better treatment outcomes in a group setting versus 1:1 care
  • Billable to extended health plans just the same as 1:1 care
  • Community: health challenges can be isolating. In a group setting, you are among friends who understand what you're going through. You have the opportunity to share and learn from each other, and might even make a friend.

When are the group sessions held?

There are two time slot options for the group sessions but you'll stick to the same time slot for each session. The time options are:

  • Mondays 9:00 am - 10:30 am Pacific Standard Time
  • Wednesdays 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm Pacific Standard Time

More time options may be added as necessary or as requested.

If you aren’t already a patient of Dr. Erica Volk, ND, you will be required to attend an individual assessment before the group sessions begin. This is to ensure that the group is appropriate for your individual needs. The cost of this pre-assessment is $125.

How is Love Your Gut different from other gut health programs?

Many programs promise to "heal your gut" through a variety of expensive supplements, shakes, and cleanses. Many people do not experience long-term benefit using these programs because this approach simply manages symptoms, instead of resolving the root cause of their digestive symptoms. The Love Your Gut program is designed to find and treat the cause(s) of your unique symptoms. You're going to learn a lot about your digestive system through this program. You'll come to understand which problems contribute to your digestive symptoms and you'll learn which tools to use to prevent and/or calm down any future gut flares.

Customized treatment tools and strategies are selected to support your unique body and lifestyle. Our ultimate goal is to increase the number and variety of foods you can tolerate, not to put you on a restrictive diet for the rest of your life. Furthermore, the status of your nervous system as well as your mental & emotional well being all greatly impact your digestive health. These areas are all addressed in this program. Throughout the program, you are provided additional resources to guide you in gaining even more insight into your digestive system and overall health.

How much does the program cost?

If you are currently a patient of mine, you are billed $100 for each 1.5 hour session for a total investment is $800 (no tax) for the entire 8-week program plus the cost of any optional lab testing. If you are not a current patient, you will also need to book a pre-program assessment at $125.

To compare this cost, if working with me 1:1, a single 1.5 hour session would cost $315 and this same 12-hour 8-week program would cost $2520 plus any lab fees. Put another way, the price of the program is 64% less than what you would pay if working 1:1.

Is the program covered by my insurance plan?

Many extended insurance plans will cover the cost of naturopathic care. If you have employee benefits or third-party private insurance, it may cover all or part of the cost of this therapeutic treatment program. If you have a health spending account (HSA) this should cover all or part of the cost of the program. It is your responsibility to contact your insurance provider and confirm whether your plan covers naturopathic medicine, including group treatment. Following receipt of your payment after each session, you will be provided an itemized receipt to submit to your insurance provider. For those of you who don’t have insurance plans to cover the cost of care, you may claim the cost of the program as a medical expense on your tax return; consult your tax professional for advice and assistance.

Do I need to pay anything up front?

No up-front payment is required to participate in the program. Payment of $100 is processed after each group session; you will receive an invoice after each payment to submit to your insurance provider or health spending account. Any amount you pay directly can be claimed as a tax deduction.

Do I need to attend every session?

In order to get the most from the program, it is highly recommended that you attend each group session. Since each cohort is limited and your space is reserved just for you, if you’re not able to attend a particular session, you must provide a minimum of 24-hours’ notice to avoid being charged a missed session fee, which can be up to the total cost of the session.

Do I need to be in British Columbia to join the program?

At this time, all participants need to be residents of BC to join the program.

I've already been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Can the program help me?

Most likely, yes! IBS is a diagnosis that should be reserved for cases when all other causes of digestive symptoms have been ruled out. Many people diagnosed with IBS receive very little or no lab evaluation to assess for other causes of their digestive symptoms. Most people diagnosed with IBS will discover one or more other treatable problems causing their symptoms when a thorough evaluation is conducted. Our goal is to empower you with as much information about your digestive system as possible.

This program is designed for those who are still seeking answers for their digestive problems as well as those who have been diagnosed with IBS and who have been limited to life-long management strategies.
The Love Your Gut program is all about teaching you about your unique digestive system and helping you find answers to your problems––for good.

If I’m currently under the care of a gastroenterologist, can I still participate in the program?

Having a naturopathic doctor on your health team is often extremely helpful! I often have patients who start their journey with me already under the care of a gastroenterologist. Through our time working together, they often learn that they have one or more underlying problem that their gastroenterologist was not able to identify. By treating these problems, these patients are often able to resolve their symptoms and discontinue the medications prescribed by their gastroenterologist.

If you are located in BC, and if you'd prefer to work with me one-on-one, you are welcome to book an appointment for individualized care, either in person or online. Learn more here.
