Natural Solutions for Insulin Resistance

Meet The Hidden Driver of Fatigue, Weight Gain, and Hormone Imbalances

If you’ve ever been told your blood sugar is “normal” but you still feel tired, struggle with cravings, or can’t lose weight, insulin resistance may be the culprit.

What is insulin resistance?

Insulin is a hormone that helps move sugar (glucose) from your bloodstream into your cells, where it’s used for energy.

With insulin resistance, your cells stop responding properly to insulin. As a result, your body produces more insulin to compensate.

At first, this keeps your blood sugar levels looking normal—but beneath the surface, your metabolism is under strain.

Insulin Resistance vs. Diabetes

Understanding the difference is key:
  • Insulin resistance = High insulin, often normal blood sugar
  • Type 2 diabetes = High blood sugar (when the body can no longer keep up)

Insulin resistance can exist for years or even decades before diabetes develops.
So if your doctor is only testing you for diabetes, they may be missing the early warning signs.

Why Insulin Resistance Matters for your Health

Insulin resistance is not just a blood sugar issue—it’s a metabolic health issue with the potential for significant downstream consequences.

I
t affects:
  • Energy levels
  • Weight regulation
  • Hormone balance
  • Inflammation

Over time, untreated insulin resistance can contribute to:
  • Prediabetes and type 2 diabetes
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Fatty liver
  • Hormonal conditions like PCOS

    Common Symptoms of Insulin Resistance

Many people experience symptoms long before anything shows up on standard labs.
    These can include:
    • Fatigue (especially after eating)
    • Sugar and carb cravings
    • Difficulty losing weight
    • Increased belly fat
    • Brain fog
    • Energy crashes
    • Skin tags or darkened skin (neck, armpits)
    • Irregular menstrual cycles
    • Worsening cholesterol levels

If this sounds familiar, it may be worth investigating further.

Testing for Insulin Resistance in Kelowna?

There are some pretty simple tests that can help determine whether you may be insulin resistant. Unfortunately, standard testing to check for diabetes often misses it. I recommend several tests that, together, can help determine what's going on.

    • Fasting insulin (one of the most useful early indicators but not routinely ordered by MDs)
    • Fasting glucose
    • Hemoglobin A1C (3-month average blood sugar)
    • Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) (while this is available I don't routinely order this)

The take-home point here is: You can have normal glucose and still be insulin resistant.

A Powerful Tool: Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM)

One of the most insightful tools I use with patients in Kelowna is a continuous glucose monitor (CGM).

This small wearable device tracks your blood sugar 24/7 for 10–14 days.

    Why patients love it:
    • You can see how your body responds to specific foods (in real time)
    • You can identify blood sugar spikes and crashes (very important!)
    • You learn what keeps your energy stable
    • All data is personalized and provided in real-time so you can make adjustments as you go.

For many people, a continuous glucose monitor provides clarity that standard lab tests simply can't provide. It also helps you truly understand the effect of lifestyle choices on blood sugar levels.

    How to Improve Insulin Sensitivity

The good news? Insulin resistance is often reversible with the right support.

Improving insulin resistance requires a comprehensive, whole-body approach that goes beyond any single intervention.

Treatment typically focuses on foundational lifestyle strategies such as optimizing nutrition to support stable blood sugar, incorporating regular movement to enhance metabolic function, and addressing stress and sleep, which play a critical role in insulin sensitivity.

In some cases, targeted natural supplementation may be used to provide additional metabolic support, while medications can also be appropriate and effective when used alongside lifestyle changes.

The goal is to create a sustainable, individualized plan that supports the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar more effectively over time.
