Getting to the Root Cause of Depression

“Depression is not due to a deficiency in
​anti-depressants!”

These are wise words from a naturopathic doctor and former professor of mine in medical school. I couldn’t agree more! While antidepressant pharmaceuticals have their place in the treatment of depression, there are so many possible treatable causes that should be thoroughly evaluated, including (but not limited to): 

• Neurotransmitter imbalance
• Food intolerance
• Thyroid imbalance
• Hormone imbalance
• Imbalance in intestinal flora
• Difficult life transitions, grief, loss, and past trauma that have not been processed completely. 
• Errors in cognition and programmed negative self-talk (that can be re-programmed!)
• Toxicity
• Chronic infection
• Social isolation
